The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define global sustainable development priorities and aspirations for 2030 and seek to mobilize global efforts around a common set of goals and targets. The SDGs call for worldwide action among governments, businesses and civil society to end poverty and create a life of dignity and opportunity for all, within the boundaries of the planet.

The goals function as a support in leading companies to demonstrate how their business helps advance sustainable development, both by minimizing negative impacts and maximizing positive impacts on people and the planet. At Skinome Project we are trying to follow the advice from the UN – to assess our impact, set ambitious goals and communicate transparently about the results.

An important part of the Skinome Project platform is to educate skincare users and consumers. We believe that today’s skincare industry is primarily driven by commercial interests and not necessarily by what is best for the skin. We promote a minimalistic skincare routine that is nice both to the skin, people and the planet. Below we have made an attempt to assess how our platform and business adhere to a few of the UN sustainability goals. In order to create an impact, we have decided to focus on a few selected goals for which we will create a long term road map describing our approach to these goals, our way to achieve them and we will under this section communicate our results.

Goal - Substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity. Water is typically the number one ingredient in most skincare products. By reducing the number of products that skincare users buy, we can support reducing water consumption both during production (fewer products produced) and by fewer products being sold. In our own products, our ambition is to always strive towards having biodegradable ingredients in order to avoid water pollution.

Goal - Recycle paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. For our skincare products  we are currently looking into the most sustainable packaging alternative that we can find and we will share more information about this prior our product launch. We will also seek to engage in a long term project in order for us to be part of creating the next generation of sustainable packaging for the skincare industry.

In our office, we recycle all the waste that we currently can recycle in Sweden. Every week we go to the local recycling station with our waste. Unfortunately, we do not have the possibility to recycle food waste right now. In many parts of Stockholm food waste is collected and made into biogas that fuel buses in the local transportation system. However, we have engaged in a discussion with our landlord to ensure we get this opportunity as soon as possible.

Oceans cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface. They contain nearly 200,000 identified species and absorb about 30 percent of carbon dioxide produced by humans. Today, plastic pollution in the oceans is one of the biggest environmental concerns and is set to triple in the next decade unless we do something about it promptly. For our upcoming product launch, we are looking into a packaging solution partly made out of so called Ocean Waste Plastic. This is plastic recovered from the oceans and converted into new packaging designs. We believe it is great that it's recovered from our sensitive oceans, a positive side benefit is that Ocean Waste Plastic reduces CO2 emission by >60% compared to virgin plastic.

Plant a tree and help protect the environment. Forests cover 30.7 percent of the Earth’s surface and, in addition to providing food, security and shelter, they are key to combating climate change, protecting biodiversity and the homes of the indigenous population. By protecting forests, we will be able to strengthen natural resource management and increase land productivity. We have decided to support a tree planting project to action against deforestation in the world and are currently reviewing what project and to how to support. As soon as we have made a decision we will update with this information here on our website.
